The Narrow and Wide Gates

Matthew 7:13-14

"Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it."

The gate that we need to enter is a narrow one. In contrast, the gate that leads to destruction is wide and many enter through it.

Perhaps we need to ask, how can we enter through the narrow gate? What does life mean to you, and do we think there is a lot of time left?

  1. This verse is quite interesting yet so true. We are made to instinctively rebel against God and focus on ourselves. Life would seem easier in many ways if we make choices with ourselves placed as #1 in mind. This is the wide gate with the easy road. When we focus on ourselves, it is easy for us to go for indulgence, selfishness, greed and lust. We may taste the pleasures of the world by striving hard on this path. Easy life potentially, but then we perish after death.

The narrow path, the one pleasing to God, is difficult indeed. Remember how Jesus Christ teaches us to not take revenge, to turn the other cheek when we are hit and to let the thief who take our cloak also take our tunic? Basically, to walk God's path as Jesus Christ did is to put down ourselves to the bottom of the pile. This road is hardly attractive, nor easy.

These thoughts make us see why we need God more than ever and we should pray we stay on the narrow path should we walk it.
